While I can create a keepsake with hair from either a mane or a tail, I find it is easier to work with tail hair and I prefer it over mane hair for most of my keepsakes. Therefore, this quick Q&A will address how to cut hair from the tail of a horse but please contact me if mane hair is all that you have available.
